Department for Culture Media and Sport
Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) aims to improve the quality of life for all through cultural and sporting activities, to support the pursuit of excellence and to champion the tourism, creative and leisure industries.
DCMS are keen to encourage media literacy, giving everyone the confidence and knowledge to make the most of today's varied media.
Although there is no single agreed definition, "media literacy" has parallels with traditional literacy; the ability to read and write. Put simply, media literacy is the ability to read and write audiovisual information - to use a range of media and be able to understand the information received.
At a higher level, media literacy includes more complex critical thinking skills such as questioning, analysing and evaluating that information.
The Communications Act 2003 places new responsibilities on the regulator, Ofcom, to promote media literacy.
