Digital Media Literacy Summit 2007

'Working for a media literate UK'

Where and when?
Channel 4, 12.00 noon 08 November 2007

Why is this important?

The Summit will be the first real opportunity for many of us who recognise the significance of media literacy to explore seriously the key issues around the fast-moving developments of web 2.0 - such as social networking.  At the same time the Summit will explore opportunities and challenges for creative content, audiences and users as well as implications for learning and literacy.

Who will be there?
We currently have some strong contributors - and the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport,  James Purnell MP will join us for part of the event. Speakers include:

  • Jon Gisby, former Managing Director of Yahoo! UK & Ireland, MD and Vice President of Media - Europe
  • Eddie Berg, Artistic Director, British Film Institute South Bank
  • Ewan Mcintosh, National Adviser, Learning and Technology Futures at Learning and Teaching Scotland (http://edu.blogs.com)
  • Matt Locke, Commissioning Editor for Education and New Media, Channel 4
  • Dr. Rachel O' Connell, Head of Corporate and Social Responsibility, Bebo
  • Yesmisi Blake, a contemporary creative entrepreneurial web 2.0 user (http://yemisiblake.co.uk ).

Who else?
You! A key part of the day will be two 'Open Space' sessions that will give the agenda over to participants to raise issues and explore ideas themselves with smaller groups -that process begins with you beforehand online - once you register to attend the Summit there is an opportunity to blog, comment or contribute collaborative thoughts.

What next?
At the end of the day we hope we will all know much more about web 2.0 - its cultural, social and educational significance. If your organisation is not already then we invite you to become a signatory to the Charter for Media Literacy. Finally I hope this day will help us decide how we can all join up to make the Media Literacy Task Force's advocacy for a recognition of media literacy's importance more effective.

Together we can help create a creative and critical media literate society - where everyone has an equal opportunity to make the most of digital media's powerful creative culture.

Register now by going to http://dmlsummit08.eventbrite.com/

After registration you will be directed to the full conference programme site where you can network and make comments, blog or add other contributions.

I really hope to see you on November 8th and to hear your views,

Heather Rabbatts CBE
Chair of the Media Literacy Task Force
