Breaking the News
A ground-breaking media literacy project focusing on broadcast television news. Launched with Breaking the News day (29th November 2005) which enabled 150 students to parallel the production of Channel 4 News on that particular day from a fully equipped newsroom next door to Channel 4 News. The Breaking the News website first went live to the general public at the end of that day.
It enables users, 14-19s in particular, to have a unique hands-on experience of cutting a news item (using regularly refreshed, current ITN rushes/footage), getting first-hand experience of the complex and time-critical process of producing and editing a news item, and thereby building an understanding of what lies behind the TV news. Breaking the News has been nominated for two television BAFTAs and won an RTS award. The project is an initiative from Channel 4, ITN and Illumina Digital.
