Important Notice

During the last five years the media landscape has changed dramatically.

In December 2009, Media Literacy Task Force took stock of its achievements and decided , after five productive and influential years, that it will now continue its work through that of its members and partners and as part of the wider post Digital Britain agenda.   In short, the objectives that the Task Force has been working towards are no less important today but we believe the needs of a media literate society will be better addressed by engaging critically with the broader discussion.

Since starting-up in 2004 the Task Force has:

  • Undertaken an important job in championing a critical, creative and cultural approach to media literacy - both amongst policy makers and within the creative media sector in the UK and Europe;
  • Put in place the Charter for Media Literacy who's value is undiminished - and which continues to be an important statement about the learning outcomes of media literacy with significant support from a broad range of stakeholders;
  • During the last five years the Task Force has stimulated debate with seminars and conferences, and partners have worked together to develop ground-breaking work such as the BBC's Schools News Report and Channel 4's Breaking the News;
  • The Charter will continue to be publicly available as a valuable resource going forward. Those who wish may sign the identical European Charter for Media Literacy at www.euromedialiteracy.eu. It is no longer possible to sign the Charter here.
